In the 1930s, the Dust Bowl, drought, and the Depression drove many independent farmers, tenants, and sharecroppers from the land.
Beyond the widely held understanding of what displaced so many people, mechanization, farm consolidation, declining demand for labor, and changing agricultural economics displaced enormous numbers of rural families. They were not simply “dusted out.” Many were, quite literally, “tractored out.”
