In 1939, Lois Adolf’s family was receiving relief assistance. Her father, Chris Adolf, had borrowed $2,138 from the Farm Security Administration to rehabilitate the family on 80 acres of leased Indian land in Washington’s Yakima Valley. Dorothea Lange photographed the family that August. They had come from Colorado in 1937 after drought and dust forced them from the farm Chris had owned and worked all his life. With eight children, the family endured severe Dust Bowl conditions before leaving Colorado.
