Sharing photos, videos, vintage images I've discovered, and -- occasionally -- commentary and thoughts from retired life and travels.

Please allow me to "Re-introduce Myself"

in commentary

Hi all,

imagePAMTRM_BadgeI decided to participate in the “Re-introduce Myself BlogFest” after seeing it on Hilary Melton-Butcher’s  blog.

My blogging here at Exit78.com is for “sharing photos, videos, vintage images I’ve discovered, and — occasionally — commentary and thoughts from retired life and travels.”  I am currently trying to maintain a very regular publishing schedule, with a new post, generally one of my travel photos, every day.  The last day without a post was December 2.

imageWhile my personal blog is here at Exit78.com, most of my blogging effort right now is in a multi-year blogging of the sesquicentennial of the American Civil War – Daily Observations from The Civil War (dotcw.com), following the American Civil War Sesquicentennial with day by day writings of the time, currently 1863, mainly diary and journal entries, letters, and other short items from the time of the civil war.

I’ve been blogging since 2004 and have found it to be quite rewarding.

Hi Mike – good to see you with us … and to read about the two blogs – I’m way behind with your daily postings .. and will be scanning through them shortly … but at some stage I’d like to read more about the Daily Observations from the Civil War … 1863 is a good year – it’s 150 years ago …

You’ve been blogging a long time and learnt a lot which you let us know about .. what’s available photo wise, videos etc etc .. I’d love it if you’d tell us a little about your worklife .. I think it’s engineering – but which sort and what sort of work you did/do ….

Cheers – delighted you’ve joined in the fun … Hilary

Hi Hilary, Actually I was navy enlisted in nuclear power, served almost 9 years, then got out an went to work at a commercial nuclear plant as an operator. Spent over 25 years teaching others how to operate before I retired and have been fortunate enough to be asked back to teach on contract. I’ve heard people describe our training program as the equivalent to an advanced college program. I do know engineers that were unable to finish.

Since 2004? I think that’s the longest tenure I’ve seen so far. And thanks for participating in the Re-Introduce Myself Blogfest!

Hi Stephen — I didn’t start out in 2004 with this blog. However, many of the earlier blog posts have been moved to this one, so there is some continuity going that far back.

Our daughter does blog hops for mommy blogger, so I was aware of them, but I’ve not had time (or the inclination) to look into them before. Publishing civil war material progressing day-by-day through the war using material from over 50 different sources and staying ahead of it all is consuming, though I have found time to read a few books. Thanks for stopping by.

What a neat project. You should pop over and visit my brother’s website. He’s a big Civil War historian.

Thanks. I will. I may also try out “The Backworlds,” since there is such a “deal” on it.

Hi, Mike,

Nice to meet you. I love historical lit. And the Civil War is quite the amazing time in American history. I hope to see more of your posts in the blogosphere.

Michael, Thanks for stopping by and commenting. The civil war is quite amazing, but truly horrific, as I see on a regular basis working through all these diaries, journals and letters. From my perspective, I can see the end, but the people writing on January 31, 1863 have no idea how long it will last and the horrors that lie ahead.

You’ve been blogging since 2004? Wow, talk about longevity… I agree that blogging is very rewarding.
Nice to meet you via the blogfest, Mike.

Hi Michelle, Thanks for dropping by an commenting. Over the years, I’ve seen a lot of people start blogs. Most don’t last very long. For me this is a hobby where I can share my other hobbies and interests and, even though I do not have a lot of regular commenters, I committed myself long ago to persevere with it. I WILL be here long after many, if not most, on this blogfest have stopped.

Hi John, Yeah, I know that I’m managed to survive longer than most. Several times in the past, I’ve gone back through the links of people who had commented on my blog during the previous year or two, only to find that a significant number either had not blogged in a long time or the link to their blog was dead. More recently some regular commenters have become friends on Facebook — and most of them, over time, have blogged less and less and many have stopped blogging. For me, blogging is a hobby that provides an outlet for sharing my other hobbies and interests. I’ll still be doing this after a significant number of those on this blogfest are no longer blogging.

Ramana, Thanks. I feel the same. I had read your most recent earlier and thought it wonderful that you and Leena were still on good terms. All too often, that’s not the case, at least over here.
