Plant Life in Craters of the Moon

October 6, 2010

I’m just going to show pictures, not try to identify each plant at this point.

The lava fields are a stark and, sometimes, seemingly barren landscape.  However, there is a wide variety of plant and – even though we didn’t see any of it – animal life in the monument and preserve.

Love the yellow ones, and the tiny pink one.

I would have liked to have gotten the pink one in better focus, but Karen was waiting for me, I didn’t have a tripod, and they were so very, very tiny.

OMG… the tree! Mike I love that one. Oh, they’re all beautiful… but the tree is the one that caught my attention. Quite striking.

And that’s the only tree of any significant size on top of Inferno Cone, Davina. Quite the harsh environment there and I’m sure I have pictures of that same tree taken on several trips out there in the 70s and 80s.

Great photos, I love the pink flower against the colourful rocks.

Thanks. I just wish I could have gotten it in a little better focus.

Hi Mike,

Reading how these pictures were taken in lava fields reminds me of when I see trees and flowers growing out of the lava flows we have in our area. I’m always amazed at how they can grow with what looks to be little to no dirt.

In a way, I wish we had camped there instead of in the KOA in town. I would have been able to get a lot more interesting images.
