We don’t watch much TV and we’ve already seen way too much of the current Michael Jackson media circus and the morbid fascination of the public and some of the Michael Jackson fans.
Most people realized that Jackson had problems, but there seems to be some sort of sick fascination of the man and those problems. The media seems to think that the public wants or needs every detail of his life and the aftermath.
While I like much of his music, he was just another wealthy celebrity with problems that were exacerbated and enabled by his wealth and influence as far as I’m concerned.
I don’t need or want excruciating details about his funeral, his will, his mom, his dad, his kids, his ex-wife, etc., etc.
Just report whatever is actually newsworthy in this story and move on, please. If there’s anything new, update us tomorrow.
I just find it annoying when there are so many more important things going on in the world that are being under reported because of this sensationalism.

100% agreement Mike!!
You said it well, Mike.
“…there are so many more important things going on in the world that are being under reported because of this sensationalism.” I couldn’t have said it better.

Amen! Where is the struggle for freedom in Iran? All boots are on the ground at Neverland. Sick.

It is annoying. Makes me glad I haven’t bothered to pay for cable this year!

I don’t completely agree. I don’t find it any more annoying than when any of our presidents is on just about every channel my cable company has every time he has a press conference, or the Anna Nicole Smith stuff, or many others. I doubt Jackson’s death is getting more publicity than Elvis’s death did, and in my opinion Jackson was more talented. I was never a big fan, liked his music sometimes, but for those who loved him, let them go through the details, leaving out the scandals, is my take on it.

I suppose that we are not as badly bombarded as you are, but bombarded we are too. I could not agree more. In my case, I never did like his music nor his dance.

It’s part of celebrity culture. I find all of it annoying.

I guess I really haven’t noticed it too much. I mean, I realize there’s been a lot of coverage, and Michael Jackson has been a trending topic on Twitter for, I think, every day since his death. But, since I really don’t watch TV news programs all that much, the coverage really hasn’t affected me that much.
I do see different stories coming out and people with their theories and so on. I don’t know if we’ll ever know what the real Michael Jackson was like with so many conflicting stories out there.

Up until about 3 months ago- we did not have television in our house for over three years. In the last 3 months I have seen more crap then I care too- it all seems over the top to me.

I am glad I don’t have TV the few lines on the news feeds on line are enough.
A sad end to a talented but sad life – I worry about children involved in this situation, but don’t think my curiosity wants satisfaction 24/7

mike there are always more important things going on in the world. why are ball players paid millions of dollars when that money can be used to feed people, give people health care. there’s so much garbage on TV..that time and money can be spent to better mankind. nope, we use it on entertainment. our government waste time and money on making bombs so we can go kill people. we spend too much time researching what the heck is on the moon. who the freak cares!!! there are people on earth. it’s not mj’s fault that we have our priorities wrong. this isn’t the first time this has happened and won’t be the last.

Bob, thanks for commenting!
Barbara, thanks. It took me a while to get the wording right.
Betsy, I agree.
Mel, You had cable? I thought y’all just got DVDs from the library.
Dot, The Anna Nicole Smith thing was in the exact same category for me. I wrote a similar post on that, but, unfortunately, that’s one of the ones that got lost when I moved the blog location. I don’t have a problem with covering the story — it’s just that I don’t think it’s more important than other things that are going on. As Vered says, it’s part of the culture of celebrity and I don’t care for it. That’s also why I do NOT watch professional sports. So far as Jackson getting more publicity in death than Elvis, there were far fewer channels and CNN, MSNBC, Fox and many more did not exist.
Ramana, I guess it’s a measure of his popularity that even in India, you’re getting to share this with us.
Vered, well said!
Dan (dcr), That’s the saving grace for us, too, since our television time has been cut back drastically. However, my mother-in-law, who is wheel chair bound and watches copious amounts of TV, is being overwhelmed by it.
Michelle, Welcome to modern television for the masses. Over the top is right.
Patricia, I don’t want to completely do away with television, but it sure is nice not to have it on very often or long.
Natural, I’m not complaining about Michael Jackson. He was what he was and, while I’m not OK with that, that’s a different matter than what I am talking about. I’m talking about the media frenzy and that I’m tired of the focus on what sells as opposed to what’s really news.
Hi Mike. The media loves to capitalize on drama. I believe they have been “trained” by the public; those who DO watch, reflected by the ratings and those who do read those trashy mags. The rest of us have to either bear it, or turn it off.
What “gets my goat” is it either goes one way or the other. The public is on the rampage “loving to hate” a celebrity and thirsting after whatever juicy tidbit they can find to support their “being right to hate”. Or, they are infatuated with a celebrity and we hear too many “Pollyanna-type” messages.
In a lot of cases, nobody even knows what the real story is by the time the media is finished. But, people make a choice to love or hate the person; they choose which information they want to hear.
Either way, it’s overdone and the end result? People like you and I turn it all off when we might miss one detail that IS important.

Davina,
Well said. I think it all goes back to marketing and the “professional wresting” fan mentality of a large percentage of viewers.
There’s very seldom something in the news where it would hurt not to know about it. Things that come to mind are the momentous events of our time — 9/11/2001, the Oklahoma Federal Building bombing, the space shuttle disasters –, but, most days, there’s little news that is that
