Im doing some research for history and I was wondering, does anyone know if that guys hat shows that he is a WWI veteran? or is it just a cool hat?

The photo was taken in 1940. WWI had ended 22 years earlier. He isn’t old enough to have served in it. The hat has a metal “badge” on the front of it. I don’t think it’s a police type badge. I’d guess the hat was from some kind of uniform — perhaps a taxi driver, truck driver or even service station attendant. Yes, at one time, some service stations had guys in uniform, back when full service was the norm.
