Note: I had no idea what kind of blossom this was.  I like to take pictures of flowers, but I am not particularly familiar with botany.  Hilary Melton-Butcher thought it might be a Dahlia (see comment below) and that gave me something to search on and I found this 1805 painting of Dahlia sambucifolia, by William Hooker on Wikipedia.
