On July 25, 2010, we headed a few miles north of Arco, Idaho to Antelope Valley (#6 on the map to the right, from a Lost River Valley Brochure from MackeyIdaho.com) on a back roads drive that would take us to Copper Basin (15), within 25 miles of Sun Valley, and to the foot of Idaho’s highest peak, Mt. Borah (17). Note that the brochure map doesn’t show a “road” from Antelope Valley to Copper Basin, but there really is a way to drive there.
This particular area was a favorite when we lived in Idaho from 1977 to 1980.
Today’s images are from Antelope Valley.

Looks like Idaho’s fairly rugged country.
Much of Idaho is very rugged. We lived on the edge of the Snake River Plain and the Lost River Mountains.
It looks rugged, but yet… pristine. And the sky is such a vibrant blue; especially in the second shot.
Pristine… I like that. I guess that’s part of what keeps drawing us back to the mountain states.
Hi Mike,
Those pictures are amazing. My daughter loves checking out your site because your pictures always come with a story. When she was younger, I used to read your posts too her now she reads them herself.
Your pictures remind me that I need to purchase a few more lenses for my Nikon…
Thanks! I’m pleased that your daughter enjoys the pictures and the narrative.
I only use 2 lenses for my Pentax — an 18 – 55 mm zoom and a 70 to 300 mm zoom that I’ve replaced twice in 3 1/2 years.
Beautiful. I agree with Davina – the word that comes to mind is “pristine,” and maybe “untouched.”
Some would disagree, believing that some of the range is overgrazed to the point that wildlife is affected. It appears untouched and is certainly little different from when we lived nearby and explored widely — reminds me of the time I got stuck in a beaver meadow bog with my 4 wheel drive vehicle and was rescued by a couple of fellows who lived with their mom in a old log cabin next to their mine. They drove me in to town…., after sitting me down to a steak supper first. True story.
WOW on that sky, Mike!! The bluest I’ve ever seen.
Before I saw the pix I was thinking this is gonna be desolate (way off the beaten red road’s path.) But wow, what a feast for mine eyes. I’ll take that rugged desolation any day.
Thanks
xo
We really liked it there. For years after we moved away, I had dreams where we would be driving down this very road.
