Wednesday Weigh-In — and a safety moment.

Started November 1, 2008:  285.6 lbs

Last week = 277 lbs.

This week = 275 lbs.

4 lbs over the 2 weeks of the holidays!

See other participants’ results at Blog to Fit – Wednesday Weigh-In.

Safety moment:

While exercise is an important component of health and fitness, doing it safely is also important.  Unusual exertion when the body is not used to it can be dangerous. If you’re not used to exercise, it may be prudent to start slowly and, possibly, consult with a physician or exercise specialist.

Proper exercise and use of exercise/weight equipment is also important.

Unfortunately, on New Year’s Day, one of my former students and, later, department manager, had a tragic accident in his home when he was benchpressing alone.  He was 49 years old and was alway fit and in shape.

Be safe while you get fit.

That is steady progress indeed and I envy you. I think that I shall start a log to keep daily progress to see if I can come anywhere near your achievement.

Very good point about safety. Bench pressing always makes me nervous, and should always be done with a spotter. I am so sorry to hear about your friend.

I use free weights, or the machines at the gym. And I try to be very mindful as I work through my routines.

On a positive note: 10 lbs! Totally awesome, Mike.

I was going around to meet the other weigh in participants. Great job losing 10 pounds. Very good point about safety, though. I remember in college one of my buddies asking me to spot him when he bench pressed and wondering how much I was really going to help with all that weight he had loaded on there.

I Have no idea how you are losing weight in the Winter and during the holidays to boot. Good Job.

    So sorry about your colleague.

Ramana – I do keep a log. I also use a heart monitor and my workouts are very strenuous and long. Any additional activity, though, should be beneficial.

Urban Panther – Thanks! Too bad that I've still got at least 70 more lbs to go if I'm to get where I'd like to be.

Except for a short period in high school phys ed, I've never use a bench press. I learned today that my colleague had been been bench pressing since he was 10 years old and that it was his release. He was a high achieving person.

White Hot Magic – Thanks! I wouldn't want to spot for anyone, either, and I'm not a small guy.

Michelle – Thanks! I am just watching what I eat, exercising regularly (4 or more times a week), exercising hard (aerobic exercise machines or walking fast), and exercising long (at least 60 minutes).

Congrats on the continued loss! You're kicking all of our butts!

Thanks for the sobering message, Mike. Too bad about your friend. That is a shame.

Blogger Dad – Thanks, Dave, I'm going to keep working at it. One thing I didn't mention is that for the last week I've had a nasty cold and several time I over-stuffed just to feel better — it didn't work. The cold's better, though my wife is down for the count with it now. I just got up and, after a light breakfast, I'm heading to the gym, and since she won't be along, it'll be one of my longer workouts.

    Avalor – Thanks!

I'd be happy if it just makes a few people think.

Wow, 10.6 pounds! That's an awesome start. I need to join this group, because if I don't lose weight soon, my clothes won't button/zip.

A few years ago I lost 50 lbs. with diet alone (exercise hurts because of the FMS). However, I have now gained it back. Sigh.

Sorry to hear about your colleague. I know someone who gave himself a hernia donig that and he was only 35 at the time.

Thanks, Dot. He wasn't a close friend, but was someone I worked closely with several times.

I think part of this weight loss for me was I was really ready to do something about it and the Wednesday Weigh-In started just after I really started in on it. It helps provide focus and motivation. In the early 90s I went from about the same starting point and lost almost 70 lbs.

The importance of a good spotter can never be stressed enough either.
