Mikes Photo Blog, November 2, 2008
As promised, I’ve resumed publishing a blog that has been moth-balled for a while. While it doesn’t have a very original title — Mike’s Photo Blog — it does feature larger images than what I am using here and on Haw Creek Out ‘n About.
Check it out!

Eyes of the Great Depression 001
One of the really neat things about the internet today is the sharing of vintage, mostly public domain, images, many of them through the Library of Congress.
While I’ve posted a few on Exit78 on occasion, there hasn’t been any sort of purpose or pattern to it — which is okay, except that it just turned out to be one of those “someday” things: “I’ll post more vintage images someday…, when I get around to it.”
I’ve decided to put more ownership and more of myself into posting of vintage images.
Focusing on the Great Depression, I’ll be initially posting images of eyes that I’ve cropped from photographs from the 1930s. Later, I hope to develop a web site where visitors will be able to see my work along with copies of the original photograph.
These images will be extra content for my visitors — published fairly frequently in addition to my own photography and commentary. Read the rest of this entry »

Previous theme
It’s time to make a theme change. The previous theme was a free partial feature version of a commercial product which was recently sold to a hosting company. For a time, I was considering buying a copy, but I decided a while back that I wasn’t going to make money blogging, or, if I did, it would be because of my content, not the container. Since the commercial theme has been sold, it’s unlikely that the free version will be updated, so it’s time to move on.
The image at the top of the blog is from a photo on an Illinois highway on a stormy day in September when we drove into Peoria.
Update 1:41 P.M — Well, now that I’ve rolled it out, I’ve found a couple of things that I don’t care for. I really don’t like having the single page with comments looking different from the main page. If I wanted that, I would have gone with one of the magazine style front pages, which I don’t like much either. So, I’ll either stick with this or I’ll be looking for other “free” templates. I really don’t feel like getting into the internal workings, much, but perhaps I’m going to have to to get what I want — whatever that is.
We voted today. I used an electronic voting machine — the only working one of the two that was in the building. Karen used a paper ballot. If there were more working machines, I think that electronic would be more efficient. Of course, I don’t have much problem with touch screens and technology, but I definitely think these machines have got to be easier than some of the old mechanical systems.
I’m pulling an old blog out of mothballs so that I have another place where I can share some of my photos. It’s called Mike’s Photo Blog. I’m in the process of working with a new free theme there also. Right now, it looks a lot like this one in layout. I deleted all of the old photos which were published under creative commons and will be publishing new ones under regular old copyright. It’s simpler. I’ll be posting photos there starting in the next couple of days.
We went camping last weekend at Lake Fort Smith State Park. The campsite was heavily wooded, especially in the direction of the satellite that our Hughes internet service is on so I didn’t even try to set up the dish. We camped 4 nights and, even though the computers were with us, we didn’t even take them out once.
We did took several long walks, including one on part of the Ozarks Highland Trail, which begins at the park. We also went into Ft. Smith on Wednesday, which was supposed to be the bad weather day and did a little bit of shopping. We went the movie “W,” which was rather disappointing. All of the supporting roles seemed to be extreme caricatures which made Brolen’s Bush appear in a better light than he should have, in my unbiased view.
I’ll be sharing some of the photos from Lake Fort Smith in a post here soon as well as a post on Haw Creek Out n’ About.
Update 11:31 pm — I’m still experimenting and looking through new themes. While I’m doing all of this, I will make sure that it is readable and viewable as best that I can.

I take a lot of photographs.
I enjoy photography in and of itself as well as being able to capture decent images of where we’ve been. My photos are my souvenirs of the places we’ve been and the outings we’ve taken.
Part of the joy of photography is sharing — which I’ve been doing here and on Haw Creek Out n’ About, where I am currently posting a new photo every day, all of them different from what I am publishing here on Exit78.
While I don’t plan to publish a new photo here every day, I do plan on posting more of them. My plan is to publish photos almost every day. On the days that I publish a regular post, there will usually not be a photo post and probably won’t be one for a day or two after that. My intent is for the written post to remain the “newest” post for at least 48 hours for commenting or discussions…, if there is any.
I’ll also be back to occasionally publishing some of the vintage images that I’ve found.
Imagine that. I’ve now kind of got a publishing plan — almost a semi-schedule of sorts.
Oh…, I’m also going to be resurrecting a mothballed blog — as another place for sharing photos — one of these days…, someday?
Do you have a publication plan of any sort or do you just do it whenever you….?
