Over a quarter million spam comments

On my Askimet spam page for Daily Chronicles of the American Civil War blog, the message today reads, “Akismet has caught 258,378 spam for you since you first installed it.”

That’s a lot of comment spam.

I really, really hate spam of any kind.

I really, really like Askimet. I just moderated 10 spam comment that got past it — out of 4000 since the last time I checked the comment moderation page. If I had to go through each and every one, I’d have comments turned off to that blog. There is just too many.

I dislike Spam also. I have a triple threat going on Akismet, Spam Karma2, and Bad Behavior not too much get past them. On Vegan Momma, the number has gone up. It was 300 daily, but it has surpassed that. Thankfully I don’t have to see it except when one slips through the cracks. ;-)

Wow. That is a lot of spam. I thought 6,000+ was a lot, which is my count and which is also a lot higher than on a number of other blogs I visit.

How long has it been since you installed Akismet? Because that’s got to be more spam than I get in eMail per year. I average about 150-200 messages per day and probably over 90% of those are spam. And, that’s just the stuff that gets through my eMail spam filters!

Wow. Just so you know, they were NOT from me! ;) I actually have noticed I’m getting less spam lately and I think it has something to do with a little tip I got to only show post summaries in my preferences - that is the only change I’ve made that I can think of that might have impacted it. But like you, I really, really, like Akismet! It’s protected me for 5,196 pieces of spam so far. Not much in comparison with yours but it’s still something! :)

Mike - that is a ridiculous amount of spam.

Some of the spam I get is the same people doing it over and over. They obviously never check, or they’d know that all their messages get deleted and they’re just wasting their time.

Wow! That is allot. Mine reads Akismet has caught 122,681 spam for you since you first installed it. Got to love Akismet.

I operate a health nutrition site. At this point, I don’t get many comments on the blog end of the site, but, of the ones I get, a high percentage are just pure spam. If I had more time, I would just respond back by ridiculing each one of them (I have a couple of times). Typically, spammers like this are the worst at what they do: the worst writers, the worst webmasters, the worst marketers, etc, etc. They just have very little to contribute to the web. It’s like they all saw some late night infommercial on how to get rich quick “using the internet”.

Akismet, Spam Karma2, and Bad Behavior— is this stuff just for wordpress blogs, or can it be installed on a google hosted blog?

Askimet is a “plugin” designed for WordPress. I don’t know about the other two.

I started out using Blogger before it was bought out by Google. When I found WordPress, it had much more capabilities than Blogger, plus it was easier to host on my own domain.

Blogger is getting better from what I can tell and may have some spam fighting capabilities. I don’t know since I haven’t used it for several years.

I think blogger has gotten better in some ways. But it really is pretty slow as far as page loading, except on blogs where I publish to my own hosting. I’d like at some point to try a wordpress blog and publish it under my own domain and on my own host server, but it didn’t look like the easiest thing to set up. Maybe I was just groggy that day, or maybe its just that sometimes I don’t think I can handle doing anything that falls out of the standard goove (limited neurons and bad firing in the synapses).

I can’t go back to blogger after using Wordpress. It is so flexible you can do also anything via themes or plugins.

Akismet works okay for me but lets through couple of spam frequently (especially the ones without links). And I hate captchas, I won’t put one on my blog. So I wrote a plugin to block comment spam without resorting to captchas called WP Captcha-Free (Sorry for the shameless plug, I hope you don’t take this as comment spam ;) ). It uses a combination of time based hash and ajax to block spam (or atleast ensure the commenter was human and not a bot). I use it myself on both my blogs and now get zero spam from an earlier 40+ per day. This doesn’t replace Akismet but does complement it very well. You can check it out at http://wordpresssupplies.com/wordpress-plugins/captcha-free/

If you do, let me know what you think!
