A volcano’s paroxysms – sudden, violent outbursts – in the Pacific island nation of Vanuatu were caught by a camera flown on a Dji Phantom drone, at times flying in the airborne debris. The images of Yasur volcano on Tanna island are from Shaun O’Callaghan, with video posted on YouTube.

I agree! I've never been close to an erupting volcano, but they fascinate me. We used to live near Craters of the Moon National Monument and a hiked over around the lava fields, cinder cones and dormant volcanoes there and in other places, including Yellowstone.

Wow… awesome video. Never had thought about using a drone for something like monitoring volcano activity. Very good idea. I wonder if video is stored in drone or transmitted to home base in real time?

The integrated camera's output is transmitted. The drone's controller has a mount for a smart phone and the smart phone has an ap for processing the camera output as either photos or video. The drone has autopilot and gps controls that apparently make it easier to control. With output on the smart phone's screen, the drone's pilot actually sees the flight from the perspective of the drone, adding to the ease of flying it.
I had assumed that the person flying the drone could see what was happening from the way that the image backed away during some of the volcanic outbursts.
