Unintentional Reinvention.

devils_walking_stick-sWhile trying to move to the Thesis 2.1 theme/framework, something happened where I could edit the new theme all I wanted to and it looked great.

However, when I logged off, the blog looked just like the old theme, no matter what I did, until I finally bollixed it all up to the point that all that was showing was a blank screen.

Nothing worked to recover it and, unfortunately, I ended up writing over the existing database with a nice new, clean and shiny, blank one.

This could be wonderful fun trying to recover the old blog posts. (#sarcasm)

However, I’m not sure that I really want to do that.

My inclination, right now, is to get the format set up and, along the way, find and re-publish some, but not all, of the older material.

Update January 8, 2014 — recovered 1234 posts, but without images.

Update 2 – also dealing with a water leak in the supply line in the front yard.

Update 3 – Water line leak is a cracked PVC coupling.  4 feet down slope and 18 inches deep from where the water was coming out of the ground.  I used a fiberglass pipe patch kit to repair it in place.  I’m going to leave to hole open with an incandescent light over it tonight — too tired to move more soil.

Knowing you as I do, I would not be surprised if you do get all the old posts back intact. All the best.

I don't know if I want all of the old posts back. This may be a good opportunity for some selective culling.

Ouch, I'm sorry to hear that. I guess you've already contacted your hosting provider to see if they might have a backup?

Actually, I hadn't even thought of that. I saved a backup before I overwrote the old database. Unfortunately, the XML file was just over the 10 mb limit for import. I tried several different import plugins, but none worked. So I edited the file in notepad and reduced the size to just under the limit. Now, I have a over 12 posts, including comments, but no images.

This may be a good opportunity to cull some of the chaff. 😉

Culling is sometimes good, might be worth it if you do think you might want to save something to check with your hosting provider. I was able to retrieve my files successfully when my site was compromised about two years ago. I use Backup Creator, might want to check that out in the future. I've been able to back up over 10G without an issue. On that site, it has a page that shows popular webhosts and comments peoples experiences backing up using their particular hosting provider. From my readings it appears that with some hosting providers they can back up very large sites. For example, Blue Host seems fine until you hit the 350GB mark.

Thanks. Backup Creator looks good for the price.

Mike, I feel your pain. It has taken a couple of years for my toyboys to bring my old blog up to date. They were so worried that about 4 different people had back up copies! I added the new Theme at Christmas time, but the old and new have still to be amalgamated. One of these years…..

    Fingers crossed for you.

Thanks. I'm getting there. Also coping with the water leak in the front yard. Spent about an hour and a half digging before I found the leak 18" down and down hill 4 feet away from where it was coming up. Cracked PVC coupling. Went to town to get pipe patch kit. Drove slow and conservatively as we're getting freezing rain. Traffic badly backed up in several places and several cars off the road. Only 7 miles to town. Came home a different way
