Why shipmates? Were you ever on board?

No I was never on board. It sank when I was 11 years old.

Shipmate usually does apply to someone who served on the same vessel. However, it is also used as an honorific for sailors who have made the ultimate sacrifice and in some other general instances.

The loss of the Thresher resulted in some operating restrictions for many of the boats built in the same time period. For instance, our test depth was restricted to about 1/3 of the original design.
