Moving on up!

February 7, 2009

I’ve decided I’m going to move this blog up one level.

The URL for the blog has been exit78.com/weblog since almost the beginning, certainly as long as almost anyone out there has been reading it.

The last part of it — the “backslash weblog” — makes it a little bit more awkward than it needs to be.

I had intended to reserve the primary level of the domain for a web site — I’m not sure to this day about what — that has never really materialized and so the blog was first /blog and then, a little later, /weblog.

Since the main level wasn’t utilized, I going to move the blog on up to the top level.

I realize this will be a little bit of a hassle for the few people out their that subscribe to the Exit78 feed. However, for a time, I will be posting from both the new location and the old location.

Now, while the new location is “live,” it’s not yet prettified. For now, the theme is just the WordPress default theme.

While I will be posting in both locations, I’m also going back and reviewing all of my old posts on this blog. Those that aren’t worth much are getting deleted. The better ones are getting transferred one at a time. I intend to transfere all that have been commented on with the comments intact, but no promises.

I can tell you one thing that 2009 will bring for blogging.

Change.

It’s the way of the world.  Blogging will be different for me — and for you — at the end of 2009 from what it is right now.

Some of the people blogging today that we read will move on to other things and either just stop blogging abruptly or just sort of fade away.

Others will change the focus of their blog and become more interesting while others will become less interesting.  Some will change the focus and be just as interesting as always.

My interests in blogs — and probably yours — will likely change somewhat as the year goes by.  Some of us will likely just get burnt out on blogging and reading blogs and decide to take a break from it — some, perhaps, even permanently.

This month marked the end of the second year for Exit78, though it has some earlier posts moved from a previous blog that was retired.  I intend to still be publishing at the end of 2009 and hope that those who drop by now will still be dropping by then.

How about you?  Do you think you will still be posting to your blog at the end of 2009?

The BIG BUMP revealed

January 11, 2008

Training Center Upper Level HallwayA couple of days ago, I posted BIG BUMP in the road for my online plans…. perhaps and there were a number of comments wondering what the heck was up.

Opal already knew as I had mentioned it was a possibility a while back, so I asked her not to give up the secret. (Thanks Opal for the comment… it was perfect!)

Oh and the picture on the post — the same one I’ve posted here — did apply very specifically to this situation.

I’ll use Teeni’s questions and my answers for part of an explanation…

  • Just what is this all about? Just wait an opportunity
  • Will you tell us soon? Likely so right now
  • How much longer do we have to wait? Not Long now
  • Is it good? Depends on the perspective, but in many ways, yes for me, yes
  • Are you getting a new job? Not really.. It’s doing some of the parts of my old job that I really enjoyed, with people I know well, and with very good compensation, so it’s not really a new job — plus, it’s only a limited engagement.
  • New camera? Don’t need one. N/A
  • New computer? Don’t need one, but there might be something about it that brings one. I’ll have to have a computer and access into the company’s network to do the work. It won’t be my computer, but it’ll be assigned to me.
  • New travel plans? There is some travel involved, but it’s not far. The travel route is virtually the same as I’ve done well over 1000 times over the years and most days it will be over, under or near the Exit78 overpass.

The main thing I am waiting on is approval for the funding and it’s at the VP level right now. They’ve already got me on the schedule — which I have a copy of — for a week from this coming Monday.

More later!

Training Center Upper Level HallwayPeople have been asking me — and, sometimes, Karen, too — about this for weeks.

All I could do is shrug my shoulders and say, “I don’t know anything about it. No one has called me at all.”

I understand that it is a bad time, with the holidays just ended, so much disruption in weeks prior to that, and significant major changes just around the corner, but it would still be nice to know, one way or another. I’ve been about to the point of deciding it was all just someone’s pipe dream.

Then a couple of days ago, I ran into a fellow — a neighbor of ours — who is a very major stakeholder in this, and HE asked me about it. All I could do is shrug my shoulders and tell him, “I don’t know anything about it. No one has called me at all.” His look of surprise was priceless. It was almost as though he thought it was a given — and it wasn’t.

Earlier today, I was sitting right here when Karen answered the phone. “Just a minute…. ….. …., Mike! It’s for you.”

Well, now, when someone asks, I can say that I’ve been contacted and there is something to all of the rumors that have been flying around. However, nothing is official, so I’m not going to get into specifics at this time — more to come later, one way or another.

  christmas cornucopia

Tonight, I had a potentially important communication come through my contact page. Unfortunately, since all that I had there was a comment form, the lady that send me the message followed it up very quickly with another message telling me that she didn’t realize that the it would be published in a public location and requesting that I delete her personal information.

Since I had moderation on for new commenters, the message didn’t get published, so there was no problem. However, it did reemphasize to me the need for having a way that people can get in touch with you, especially if you are open to making money from your blog.

So, this evening, I took the time to do another of those things on my to-do list. I added a contact form to the contact page of this blog.

I don’t anticipate it being used very often, but it’s there now.
