In French, no less.

I’m still working on the new Haw Creek site.  My primary effort  is to make sure that all the old content points to the appropriate page or post on the new site.  This includes merging two old blogs into one.

This morning, I noticed something odd.  The ad links unit at the top of the page was in French! (See image at the top of this post)

It took me a moment to figure out why.

It turns out the title of the post from 2010 I was working on was from a Kansas place that has a French name, Marais des Cygnes, which means “Marsh of the Swans”1.

Winking smile  Funny!

I’m wondering how in the heck they came up with that name? Seems really odd for something in the middle of Kansas to have a French name.

I can understand why you were thrown by a loop when you saw the names of those links. I sure would have been!

I assumed that it was from French explorers, since Kansas, along with so much more, came from the Louisiana Purchase. I did a little further research:

The Osage River was called the Marais des Cygnes (marsh of the swans) by French explorers and trappers living among the tribes, and the Kansas Legislature later adopted the name “Marais des Cygnes” in Kansas because there is another Osage River in Kansas.

Hi Hilary — Yes, the Enderby Wharf telegraph page was interesting. Ironic how slow communications were between the US and its foreign minister to the UK, Charles Francis Adams, during the civil war, just before the first successful transatlantic telegraph cable.

I’m amused at the ads that follow me around, too. But so far they’ve all been in English!

I get a tad irritated about the ads following me, especially when I’ve made my purchase or decided not to — or if the search on the product was just for research with no intent to buy.
