October 4, 2011 was a breezy, chilly day on the north rim area of the Grand Canyon – not too chilly to keep us off the trails, but jackets were needed. As the day progress, the weather got more cloudy and quite blustery, with periods of rain. We had supper at the Grand Canyon Lodge.
Angel’s Window, on the Cape Royal Trail – A spur off the trail leads out over Angel’s Window. It is quite narrow over the window itself, but it is fenced on both sides. The view is spectacular!

When we hiked to the bottom of Grand Canyon it rained & the ditch below the rock wall where I slept, filled with water. The kids made a Store of the food people had left there before heading up. Nobody bought. When one kid got ahead, going back up, I took something out of the slow one’s pack & put it in the fast one’s pack. It worked, but I had to be sneaky about it.
It was warm so we were surprised at the snow on the top.
Until this trip in 2011, the only time we had been to the Grand Canyon was a short stop when I was stationed in Idaho and we were on our way back home from visiting in Arkansas. We had Karen’s two youngest siblings with us. They were spending the summer with us. A few weeks later we went backpacking in the Sawtooths. Our two pre-schoolers did better than Karen’s 12 year old sister, who wimped out on a day-hike from our “base camp.”
P.S. The Kids/children were different ages so I had to fix the backpack weights accordingly.
