Debo – Active sonar (pinging) is not normally used on submarines. It gives their position away. Passive sonar would have been ineffective if the surface ship was in the baffle area — the area behind the ship where the wash of the propeller “baffles” the sound.

Barbara – Thanks. Being on submarines was very memorable. I still have dreams where I shipping out for still another patrol

Hi Mike,

Thank you for sharing this. I’ve always been intrigued by submarines, but never knew anyone who had actually been on one. It must have been a memorable experience.
