Olbrich Botanical Gardens, Madison, Wisconsin, September 22, 2008, unidentified blossom.

Olbrich Botanical Gardens is located in Madison, Wisconsin. Named for its founder, Michael Olbrich, the gardens are owned and operated jointly by the City of Madison Parks and the non-profit Olbrich Botanical Society. The gardens were officially established in 1952.

Noteworthy additions to the gardens were the Bolz Conservatory in 1991 and a Thai pavilion or sala, a gift to the University of Wisconsin–Madison from the Thai Chapter of the Wisconsin Alumni Association and the government of Thailand through its king, Bhumibol Adulyadej. Opened in 2002, it is one of only four sala outside of Thailand and one of two in the United States (the other is located in Hawaii). – Wikipedia

Farmers’ Market, at the Wisconsin State Capitol, Madison, Wisconsin, September 13, 2008

On  Saturdays, rain or shine,  from the middle of April through the beginning of November, the market is held around the state Capitol Square and on Wednesdays during the same period it is held in the 200 block of Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd., rain or shine.

During the winter, it can be found at other locations — indoors, of course.

The market is a producer-only farmers’ market. All products in the market are produced by the vendor doing the selling.  No resale is allowed.

The Dane County Farmers’ Market (DCFM), operating continuously since 1972, is an outlet for Wisconsin-produced homegrown fruits, vegetables, meats, cheese, eggs, bakery products, cider, maple syrup, honey, sorghum, fresh and dried flowers, herbs, houseplants, jams and jellies, pickles and other prepared food products.

… intended to give growers and producers of goods and consumers an opportunity to deal directly with each other, rather than through third parties.

… intended to enhance the Capitol-Concourse area of the City of Madison.

Farmers’ Market in Madison at Wisconsin State Capitol, 9/20/08

Our grandson just finished his testing in karate for first level black belt.

He will be 11 next month and has been in karate for 4 years.

He gets his black belt in an award ceremony tomorrow near where he lives in Wisconsin.  Karen is up there visiting – which was arranged some time ago to coincide with this event.

I wish I could be there with Karen to visit our daughter, son-in-law, granddaughter, and grandson, but I have classes to teach.

We got a little bit of a late start on June 10th, a Sunday, when we headed for Madison for a picnic and a hike. It was a beautiful day and I was skeptical that we would be able to find an empty table at a park in the city. We were following our daughter, Jessica, and son-in-law, Shane — the grand-kids were with us. Since we had never been in Madison before, and didn’t have a clue where they were heading, it could have been very interesting. However, Shane drove slow so the “old man” following him — me! — could keep up and we ended up finding a table at Tenny Park, a small park near Lake Mendota on the Madison isthmus.

After the grand-kids were done playing following lunch, we headed out again. I really didn’t have a clue where we were going and, for a while wasn’t sure Shane did either. However, before long, we stopped at a University of Wisconsin gardens.

The Allen Centennial Gardens are open daily from dawn to dusk and there is no entrance fee. The gardens serves as a 2.5 acre outdoor classroom for the Department of Horticulture. Allen Centennial Gardens is centered around a beautiful Victorian gothic house known by several names, including “the Agricultural Dean’s Residence.” One of the first buildings on the agricultural campus, the house served as residence for the first four deans. Today it is home for the offices of the Agricultural Research Stations.

Allen Centennial Gardens was dedicated in October 1989. It was designed to compliment the house and existing plantings, including a larch tree planted in 1899. (See more at the Allen Centennial Garden web site.)

From the gardens, we walked past Porter Boathouse to the shore of Lake Mendota and took a pedestrian/bicycle path along the shore over to Memorial Union. Round trip, we walked a little under 2 miles. It was a nice stroll through the woods along the lake. There were a lot of other folks out walking, running, and bicycling.

Memorial Union is one of two buildings that comprise the Wisconsin Union. The other is Union South, located in another area of this very large campus. The Union is the “social, cultural, and recreational center of campus” and “serves as a daily gathering place for students, faculty, staff, community members, and visitors.”

The 19th annual Isthmus Jazz Fest was in it’s last few hours on the Memorial Union Terrace on Lake Mendota when we got there. We stopped inside for some ice cream and then went down by the lake with the grandkids while Professor Les Thimmig was playing the sax.

My newest gallery of images is from two weekend visits to the Dane County Farmers’ Market on the Square in Madison, Wisconsin, on September 13 and 20, 2008.

Both visits provided a wide variety of opportunities for photography.

The first weekend visit was on a rainy Saturday.  A number of the gallery images include people with umbrellas while others are of the vendors and their products.  There are also several photos that include the Wisconsin Capitol building.

The second Saturday visit was a sunny day.  Along with the product vendors, there were also musicians and street artists.

The Saturday farmers’ market is huge.  We made it all the way around the square on the first visit in about 2 hours.

This year is a very different political year.

I’m still not going to talk about my own politics here — that’s personal.

The politics of our grandchildren — that’s interesting.

When Obama made his speech in Madison, Wisconsin, on the evening that he won the Potomac primaries, our grandchildren were in the audience.

Emily Mills, the lady who took this photo, observed, from her vantage point in the press area:

When Obama himself finally made his grand entrance, the handful of young college girls standing in front of me (on the other side of the fence) started screaming and jumping up and down like there was a dreamy movie star in the vicinity. That sort of reaction is fascinating to me, and, I think, somewhat unique to the Obama candidacy. I don’t suppose McCain or Clinton elicit similar reactions from their supporters. My blogger friend leaned over to me at one point and asked, “Since when did politics become cool?”

The following week, our grandson was so interested in the process that he asked his dad to take him to the polls when he went to vote — before school.

My earliest memories of politics are from when I was the same age, seven years old. It was during the campaign of another very charismatic president. All I really remember is kids playacting the Kennedy vs. Nixon contest in the playground.

The campaigns this year have been far more interesting than most in the past. I think turnout has been extraordinary for a large percentage of primaries. My wife and I voted in primaries for the first time ever.

Maybe it’s because of the the writer’s strike and — now that it’s over — politics will go back to norrmal.

It is certainly different traveling with small kids, especially when it’s usually just the two of us. While we really had fun with them, there was little or no time to do many of the things we would normally do. Even though there was internet access, I really didn’t get on line very much.

Two more days here. We’ll be leaving on Wednesday headed for Spirit Lake Iowa. Friday, we’ll head for a campground a little south and west of Omaha, Nebraska. From there, we’ll leave next Sunday, headed for Lone Jack, Missouri, where we’ll be for three nights. From there, we’ll head for home.

Hey Mike, While in Spirit Lake, Iowa, look for U______t. Our family “was” a large part of that area many years ago. That is where the largest concentration was found.

We are heading for a new campground. Our son-in-law, Shane, is on a business trip to Vancouver, British Columbia, and we are taking our daughter and grand-kids “camping.”

The place we are going to is in the southeastern “corner” of Minnesota. The closest city of any size is La Crosse, Wisconsin.

We will be there for several days, returning to De Forest, Wisconsin on the 17th. I don’t know if we will have any internet access until then.
